We want to meet strict customer accuracy requirements.

Market requirements for manufacturing span a wide range, and customer needs are becoming increasingly diverse. For example in the automobile industry, as a result of the accelerating trend toward EVs, complex dies that integrate multiple parts, and high-accuracy dies using high hardness materials, are required. Product life cycles are also becoming shorter and there is increasing demand for reducing costs and shortening lead times in die production as well. What should we do in order to meet these difficult customer requirements and achieve manufacturing that provides high added value?

With a wire-cut EDM...
We meet high-difficulty needs utilizing the 40 years of successful experience that we have built up since our founding.

The environment surrounding the die industry and the manufacturing industry in general is continually changing. Since Sodick was founded, we have continued to strive for high accuracy and high quality in our manufacturing while adapting to meet these changes. In 1981, we marketed a wire-cut EDM with oil machining fluid specifications. Over the approximately 40 years since that time, we have continued to refine our technologies in order to meet customer needs.

In 2022, we renovated the AP250L wire-cut EDM and created the AP250L i Groove Edition! This product can use φ0.02 super-fine wires and is also capable of automated wire threading (optional feature). It eliminates concerns of corrosion even during prolonged machining, and can meet an increasingly diverse range of high-difficulty customer needs including precision shapes and machining of difficult-to-cut materials. Please make use of this product in fields where precision machining is required, such as medical devices and semiconductors. You can also see an actual machine at the JIMTOF Sodick booth.

We want to reduce streaks and unevenness.

When machining stepped shapes and workpieces with high plate thickness using a wire-cut EDM, streaks sometimes form on the machined surface. When the machining conditions are unstable, streaks become more likely. When machining thick workpieces, it is difficult to produce the required surface roughness and dimensions at the lower edge of the workpiece. When the machining count is increased, streaks and unevenness become less likely, and it is possible to improve the accuracy and surface roughness. However this increases the machine operating time and reduces efficiency, while also increasing the amount of wire consumed. What should we do to carry out efficient machining using wire electrical discharge machining?

With a wire-cut EDM...
The new technology “i Groove Edition” delivers both improved accuracy and energy savings.

Ordinarily with wire electrical discharge machining, machining the lower edge of the workpiece consumes more wire and the line shapes become finer compared to machining on the upper edge of the workpiece. Unless this is addressed, a difference in dimensions will occur between the top and bottom of the workpiece, adversely affecting surface roughness and straightness accuracy.
The “i groove” wire rotation mechanism is an original Sodick technology that rotates the wire as it is fed during operation. This continually keeps an unworn surface of the wire in contact with the machining surfaces throughout the upper edge to lower edge of the workpiece and produces a machined surface with a high-quality finish. At the same time, it also helps to reduce the amount of wire consumption.
In the recently released "i Groove Edition", we reviewed the machining fluid processing system and control methods in order to save energy, and made it possible to deliver both higher efficiency and improved surface quality.
